Dear Professor Cohen,

After talking with the rest of my Oral  exam committee, I've not been
able to reschedule my exam from its original time: Wednesday morning,
May 19, 9am-11:30am.  The conflicts are all of the "teaching a class"
kind.

I very much would  like you to be the chairman.  If you could cancel,
reschedule,  or find a guest lecturer  for your class, I'd appreciate
it.    I've  told  the  graduate  studies  office  that  you  (almost
certainly) %2will%* chair the Oral.  If you decide not to, please let
me (and/or them) know.

The first draft  of my  thesis is being  edited now,  and the  second
draft will be available in a week or so. I'll give you a copy at that
time.
